Castles

Some examples of Catles or Chateaus you may come across here

Do you love castles as much as we do?

Then you have come to the right place. After all, the Allier is the department with the second most castles. Many of these are privately owned. Castles in our area that are open to the public include:

  • Château de Saint Aubin sur Loire in Saint Aubin sur Loire. In beautiful condition (recently completely restored, inside and outside) with beautiful garden, park and interior (58 km)

  • Château Lapalisse (15 km) with beautiful woodwork and painted cassette ceilings ( plafond à caissons ) (since 1400 still owned by the original owners / family)

  • Château Drée in Curbigny. In beautiful condition (inside and outside) with beautiful rose garden, park and interior, despite the distance (60 km) very worthwhile and excellent to combine with the Château of La Clayette , which is only 5 minutes away (exterior only).

  • Château Busset (33 km) with complete interior and beautiful garden.

  • Forteresse de Billy (35 km) real medieval castle in a nice village and here again.

  • Here a selection from the 574 "châteaux et belles demeures" in the Allier! (With all necessary information for a visit)

Castles route (route 102 km / 2 hours and 10 min. Pure travel time)

Castles to just drop by and view from the outside. You could start your route through the 'Vallée de la Besbre', starting at the aforementioned castle of Lapalisse (after 15 km) and then drive through the Besbre river valley past the following castles:

Further away: Château Avrilly (80 km) (Very beautiful, is further north, perhaps something for on the way back?
